Boye
A short story about a red-skirt-wearing fisherman’s son named “Boye.” He goes out near the of a river near his family home when he spots a flock of seagulls fighting over a fish. He attempts to save the fish but is too late, so he buries the body in the shallows with what is known as the glowing “sea angel” flowers sprouting near the side. On his way home, his trip is interrupted by non-other than the spirit of the fish formed by water and split into two, one representing the light colored foam in the sea and the other representing the dark deeper waters.
As the story's world expands, new environments are played with. The hope has always been that Boye's world would be fantastical, pushing the boundaries of reality.
This was the first photo I drew one random day, later comprising the story of Boye and how he meets the fish shown.
This is the first concept of "Mother," a sea guardian that acts as the overseer and keeper of all the oceans living things and their spirits.
Boye is meant to be expressive but his clothing is important, especially his bright and large brimmed hat. The idea is you will be able to recognize his character, even in large environments.
"Mother" acts as a explanation for why the spirit fish came to fruition, "she" is essentially their origin story.
The area Boye lives in, a somewhat modern boat town near the mountains, with a coast guard, fishing and shallow reefs.
Fun Fact: While not canonical, I was given some name suggestions for the two fish! We ended with Tapioca (Light Blue) and Gummy (Dark Blue).
